Why cycling in the middle of the lane is not a good idea

Watch the video "Cut up by taxi LV04 N**".

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~ijackson/bikecams/

The taxi overtakes the cyclist, Ian Jackson (the creator of
uk.rec.cycling.moderated) who is cycling in the middle of the lane.

After being overtaken, Jackson then confronts the driver when he stops at
the junction.

Jackson: "You cut me up"
Taxi driver: "You were cycling in the middle of the road!"
Jackson: "I'm supposed to, read Cyclecraft!"

I'm not sure how many drivers have read Cyclecraft but the document that
matters for legal purposes is the Highway Code which specifies that road
users should keep left. This applies to all road users.

This confrontation was entirely avoidable and could easily have turned
violent. At the point the taxi overtook the cyclist , there was no reason
for the cyclist not to have been keeping to the left of the lane. Jackson
had already passed the parked bus on the other side of the road and was
still 100m from the junction. With Jackson occupying more of the road than
was necessary, I suspect the driver could still have overtaken safely and
given Jackson plenty of room but was probably antagonised by Jackson's
obstructive behaviour and so passed closer than he should have which is
obviously both wrong and dangerous.

Ian Jackson has wisely fitted both forward and rear-facing cameras to his
bike in order to collect evidence in the event of a road incident.
Ironically, he has admitted that far from the cameras being a safety
measure, the front camera once got caught up in his front wheel causing it
to seize and Jackson was then thrown over the handlebars of his bicycle. I
thnk this is shown in one of his videos.

Cycle and drive safely and don't deliberately antagonise other road users.
This applies to all road users.
