There's been several prior discussions about 'odd' numbering ranges in
the UK telephone numbering plan.

Here's yet another one.

In what way is this range 'mixed', and how did that happen?

1768 88 Allocated BT Mixed 4+5 & 4+6 07/1994

So, some numbers are supposedly (01768) 88xxx and others
are (01768) 88xxxx and yet there is no further breakdown of
the divisions noted?

There should at least be some entries in the F column here.

Is it even true, or some sort of typo?
