Scam recorded calls

Hi I wonder if anyone can help me.

My wife has had a lot of recorded messages this week offering loans and
today she listened to the whole message at the end of which it said if you
want to be taken off our database press 9. I am now worried as she pressed
it. Is there any way it is a scam and we could of incurred some form of
charge. She called BT who said it was probably innocent as these calls do
happen but it could be a scam so can anyone help.

Also on how to stop these calls as we have a poorly person in the house who
doesn't want to have to get up to take these silly calls?
