Canal Walk, Portsmouth

Not wanting to divert the Stockport canal thread again, but as a result of
reading it, does anybody know if there was ever a canal in Portsmouth.
Interestingly, the railway runs directly alongside it, so maybe utilising
something already there many years ago?
Post code is PO1 1 RB for anybody that wants/needs to look at google maps.
Always intriqued me when living there, but afraid I never got round to
investigating further.
