Scotrail's 'Advance' loyalty programme are doing another offer... 25 pounds
for a return ticket for two anywhere in Scotland. 'Advance' is easy to join
on their website... just requires to hold a season ticket (eg weekly
Ardrossan Town to Ardrossan Harbour) or a first class ticket (eg Waverley to
Haymarket single) which costs about 3 pounds.

Full terms and conditions:

1. Each Advance member is entitled to purchase up to two 2 for £25 return
tickets with the voucher attached for travel anywhere in Scotland. Each
ticket issued will be valid for 2 persons travelling together.
2. Offer is valid for travel till 31 August 2010, all outward travel must be
completed by 31 August 2010. Return travel is valid up to one month from
date of outward travel.
3. Return tickets are valid for travel between any two stations in Scotland.
Monday to Friday travel before 0915 is not permitted, nor on services
departing Glasgow Queen Street/Central, Haymarket and Edinburgh Waverley
between 1642-1809 inclusive or on the 1815 Edinburgh-Glasgow Queen Street
service. Passengers may however travel on the 1756 Edinburgh to Glasgow
service via Shotts. There are no weekend travel restrictions. This
restriction does not apply for journeys on the Glasgow Queen Street -
Oban/Fort William/Mallaig and Inverness - Kyle/Wick/Thurso routes.
4. Bookings can be made at scotrail.co.uk/advance, via the Advance members
Hotline on 0845 078 0077 (allowing at least 5 days for postage) or at
ScotRail staffed stations on presentation of this promotional voucher.
5. Customers must carry their Advance membership card with them whilst
travelling to validate their tickets.
6. Travel is valid on ScotRail, First TransPennine Express, Arriva Cross
Country, East Cost and Virgin Trains services within Scotland (excluding
travel on the Caledonian Sleeper).
7. Refunds less a £10 administration fee are permitted on tickets submitted
for refund before the outward date of travel.
8. Change of travel plans are not permitted.
9. There are no further discounts for children or Railcard holders. Tickets
are valid for Standard Class only. Upgrades to First Class, including
Weekend First, are not permitted.
10. Scotrail reserve the right to amend or withdraw this offer at any time.

That suggests it's some kind of flexible ticket rather than advance
