IIRC the whole of the old London St Pancras was electrified, despite
only electric suburban trains using it. I wonder if some platforms
ever saw an electric train in service?

Was this a mistake? I don't think so. The mistake was not wiring the
line from Bedford to Sheffield (or better still Doncaster/York).

There was and is no reason why access to those platforms could not
be retained for emergency use. It was simply a matter of bean
counting.
