Between the Lines: Railways In Fiction And Film, showing Thursday October 9th on BBC 4 at 9:00pm Lovers parting at a station, secret assignations in confined compartments, the runaway carriage, the rooftop chase... railways have long been a staple of romance, mystery and period dramas. In this programme, novelist Andrew Martin (pictured), creator of Jim Stringer the Edwardian Railway Detective, takes a fascinating journey along the fictional railway, finding out how trains came to shape the work of writers from Dickens to JK Rowling. He shows how, at first, locomotives were seen as frightening, but they began to be accepted, until by the time of The Railway Children they had become a symbol of innocence and Englishness. He shows how trains made for unforgettable cinema in The 39 Steps and Brief Encounter, and how when the railways fell out of favour in the 1960s, their plight was highlighted in John Betjeman's films. Martin also shows why trains continue to fire our imagination, long after the passing of the steam age.[ Auf dieses Posting antworten ]
