I don't understand why the headlines always scream about "lost" data.

Firstly, it's not lost in the sense that the people who need it no
longer have it.

Seccondly, the scandal is that it's been shared, not lost.

Thirdly, cases like this are the tip of the iceberg, compared with all
the unencrypted text files flying about.

If you get telemarketed by a charity and agreed to make a regular
donation, there's a good chance that the agency will send an
unencrypted email of your bank details to the charity.
