You say "ahead" and that's exactly where people do look. That's why things coming out of side roads are so scary - because they're unexpected. If instead of a LC this was an entrance to a building site and large vehicles with limited scope for manoeuvring were exiting slowly then a man with high viz would be used to stand in the road and be 100% sure of what was happening at all times and perform any necessary communication between the parties.
