Sometimes it can be a free for all wander along the perimiter road/ track airside in front of the main terminal, I have once some while ago disembarked from a inbound flight and seeing no-one was supervising where anyone was going went along the lines of aircraft and watched the next couple arrive on stand, even to standing right behind the man with the ping pong bats.
