As a matter of interest, did this ticket have a "+" marker in the
Route field, indicating that travel by Underground was included in the
price?

By my calculations, yes it was valid. Valid routes between Cambridge
Group of stations and Hackney Group are via London or by map WA or by
maps TS+WA.

You travelled via London. The section from London to Hackney is valid
by map TS, among others. Map TS shows that a valid route from London
to Hackney is the rather circuitous journey Liverpool Street - Barking
- Walthamstow - Gospel Oak - (Caledonian Road & Barnsbury) - Highbury
& Islington - Hackney.

You chose to use a subset of this valid route. That's OK because
starting late, breaking journey and finishing early are all allowed
with a Cheap Day Return. In contrast, if you had used a Saver Return,
break of journey is not allowed on the outward portion until 7
September but is OK on the return. From 7 September the replacement
ticket for a Saver Return will allow break on both legs. Such are the
complexities of railway travel!

Learn how to use the online National Routeing Guide. Read this first:
http://www.atoc.org/rsp/_downloads/Routeing_Guide/instructions.htm
then start here:

Yes, that would be a very good idea indeed.
