I think they usually start allocating from the end of the coach, and Advance ticket holders will usually be in there first. While it would be less efficient, it would be *very* nice to have an airline-style option of choosing your seat from a seat map. I'd reserve a lot more often if you could - the main reason I don't is the risk of a crap seat, especially now on an Advance ticket where you are required to use it.
