Mirfield woes

I went to Mirfield recently. I went out from London via Leeds and
fancied returning via Healey Mills and Wakefield. Got to the platform
with a couple of minutes to spare and the auto-announcer said "The.
Next Train. At. Platform One. Is For. Wakefield Westgate. Calling at.
Wakefield Kirkgate. And. Wakefield Westgate."

A pacer rolled in, I boarded it and off we went. Jolly lady checked my
ticket (actually a BR staff travel 'box' so no clue as to my
intentions) and all was well, until she announced the next stop as
Ravensthorpe. She came back through the train and I said "Is this the
Leeds train, then? I thought it was Wakefield" "Oh no,love, that one
follows this one from Huddersfield. You'll have to go via Leeds now".

OK, I didn't check the front of the train, but I thought the
announcement was clear enough. The pax remaining on Mirfield platform
were obviously 'in the know' and waiting for the Wakefield train; I
had assumed they wanted Leeds.

I am an experienced rail traveller and never normally get on the wrong
train (AFAICR the last time was getting on the Lanark fast rather than
the Hamilton Circle stopper at Glasgow Cen LL in about 1980). So did
I mishear the announcement, or misunderstand it (is "the next train"
meant to be like "Next Friday", i.e. not tomorrow but Friday next
week?), was it a one-off or is it a regular thing that the locals have
learned to ignore?
