I've been following this discussion with some interest, as my job
doesn't lend itself readily to home working.

What *every* contributor to this thread (with the notable
exception of Mr. Hulme) has failed to take into account is that
Homo Sapiens is a *social animal*, conditioned by heredity to
work best in groups. (*1) While I don't mind an occasional day on
my own, I'd function very poorly over the long term if I was
expected to spend any long period alone...

(*1) There are exceptions, of course, as with almost everything,
but I've no doubt it's a small minority.
