So running through is less hassle if the lines used at the east > and west ends of the station layout actually line up IYSWIM? That's a very good point. Anything coming from Reading or Bristol off the Camp Hill line and heading for Manchester will cross to the "down" (i.e. it's now reversible) curve from St Andrews to Grand Junction and then be able to take the crossover into the down main from London, thus approaching New Street from the Stour tunnel and using Platform 6 or thereabouts. That's not too bad in terms of conflicting movements (at least where it really matters), but this is achieved at the expense of conflicting movements at Kings Norton for the trains from Bristol. Whether that's better than a reversal at the west end after coming off the West Suburban line is debatable. I don't know the precise layout, but access to 6B from University and then going out to Wolverhampton is probably not too bad in terms of conflicting movements. In the Manchester-Bristol direction the through running route isn't quite so good, since you either have to use the low-numbered platforms and cross the down London line on the level (to get from the up line to the curve round to St Andrews) or you foul up the western end of New Street and use the Midland side platforms (once on the Up Derby line in the tunnel there is no further conflicting movement). Conversely in this direction there is no conflicting movement (or at least only a trailing conflict) at Kings Norton - the trains just run through KN and then trail on to the Down Fast before Northfield.
