Not a plane I'd heard of so I had to google it. It seems the Mk1 Valetta was
current in 1948 so  yours may not have been that old. May be it had a hard
life ;-)

Can you remember which way the seats were facing? I was surprised to learn
on my first RAF flight (a BAC 1-11 of RAE Farnborough) that the passenger
seats faced backwards.

I expect you never rode in a C130, they had (probably still have) a sort of
"deck chair" which are uncomfortable after minutes rather than hours.
