When "I was a lad" there was one local shop you could buy components in, unless you could convince the local TV repair shop to sell you some bits. Until about 1970 it was in a relative backwater of the town, a bit dusty, and mainly stocked with components etc. They did stock some ex-WD radio stuff and maybe some early commercial amateur kit. I don't think they stocked much domestic stuff. I was run by a father and his two sons. They always seemed customer friendly, encouraging to newcomers etc. and over the years I spent most of my pocket money / part-time job wages there. At some point, around 1970, they moved to a more central location. The new shop was larger and had a more domestic focus. They still sold components etc. I recall seeing (and falling in love with) an Eddystone radio there in about 1970/71. It was (at the time it seemed) wildly expensive and beyond reach. Long before the time I'd saved enough, it was sold. I've only seen the exact model once since then and regret not snapping it up to this day. They were still going strong when I moved away in the mid 70s and for many years I always visited them when visiting "the home land". The shop was called Goughs and was one of those things which set me on my path to electronics / radio as a hobby, University, and a career in engineering. On a recent visit I was dismayed to see they are closing down. The father died some years back, one of the sons more recently, but it remained a family business until the last. I exchanged some memories with the wife and daughter of the founder and left feeling quite sad. -- 73 Brian www.g8osn.org.uk[ Auf dieses Posting antworten ]
