Turns out the question has already been asked there, with only one reply
basically stating "Yes, I'd like to do that too".

Good point, but I think that scenario is less relevant here than in many
places as the coverage area is small with a sharp cutoff due to local
terrain (everyone within coverage should be able to hear everyone else),
and the population within the coverage area is low.

Nobody said it was, although my references to Echolink do seem to
confuse people. I merely mention it to illustrate the concept of a cheap
and simple link that anyone can set up, as opposed to the greater
investment of time and effort (and money) that goes into setting up a
repeater.
