Bill Mulcahy rockaway@prodigy.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote of the Week: "I don't want to see the fastest train in the world built halfway around the world in Shanghai, I want to see it built right here in the United States of America." President Obama in a story this week on high speed rail --------------------------------------------------------------------- So Far So Good With Obama!!! --------------------------------------------------------------------- As Bill Sees It (Editorial): Obama Ignoring Aviation Industry Lobbyists? I was listening closely when President Obama visited the Dept. of Transportation this week. Incredibly, he didn't say one word about the need to create jobs by expanding aviation. That is a very good sign even though airports will be getting one billion dollars in stimulus money to "to improve systems to check for explosives and weapons." I don't mind tax dollars going to improve airport safety, especially if it means contracts going to American manufacturers of safety products. High Speed Rail (Mag-Lev?) Gets A Boost From Obama!!! I was pleased to see that Obama seems to be a proponent of an improved, high-speed rail as an alternative to the noisy, air polluting "regional" jets that are now used by so many Americans to go from city to city. I like the idea of the magnetic levitation high speed rail located high on concrete supports. This is the quietest and most attractive of the different rail alternatives. This concept has been around for fifty years yet is now only starting to some being built in some countries. The only commercial maglev train operating today is in Shanghai (shown above left). Once America led the world in the development of transportation, today it seems to be countries like Japan and China. We could regain our world leadership by developing a practical, affordable magnetic levitation rail system which would stop the pollution of "regional" airports and planes. I'm not impressed by "bullet trains" that use the same old iron rails and blast their air horns as they come to intersections. It seems to me that is just a continuation of polluting technologies. It's time to start developing a rail system for the twenty-first century and beyond. Regional Airport Expansionist Schumer Involved In The Madoff Scandal? I wasn't surprised to see that New York's regional airport expansion-promoting Senator Schumer was named as not only the top political benefactor of the "alleged" Madoff crime family; but he also got top dollars from another indicted investor con man, Allen Stanford!!! I saw "Chuck" being interviewed on Fox News about his association with Madoff and I never saw him sweat so much. It turns out that Schumer has been the main force behind the current economic meltdown and probably didn't need extra negative publicity. According to a recent N.Y. Times story "Schumer, a member of the Banking and Finance Committees, repeatedly took other steps to protect industry players from government oversight and tougher rules, a review of his record shows. Over the years, he has also helped save financial institutions billions of dollars in higher taxes or fees." Madoff is due to cop a plea this week and "hopefully" will name politicians who allowed him to pull off his 50 billion dollar con game. Perhaps he will name con man Schumer as a co-monster. Maybe that's why Schumer was sweating. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Republicans Criticize Obama's Rail Ideas!!! Amid praise from rail and transit advocates, however, many Republicans have zeroed in on Obama's high-speed train initiative as a prime example of government excess. In his response to the president's address to a joint session of Congress last week, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said that the program represents "wasteful spending" and suggested that the bill included money for a proposed magnetic levitation, or maglev, line from Las Vegas to Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif. The project could be eligible for such funding, but it is not named in the bill. Administration officials say the rail initiative is particularly important to Obama, who routinely talked about the benefits of high-speed passenger service during the presidential campaign and who initially requested $10 billion in stimulus money for such projects. In a speech to U.S. mayors last summer, Obama noted that China is home to the world's first commercial.maglev train, capable of speeds faster than 300 mph. "I don't want to see the fastest train in the world built halfway around the world in Shanghai," Obama said. "I want to see it built right here in the United States of America." Philadelphia Airport To Dump Traffic On New Jersey's Atlantic City? EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. - The plan would shift up to 50,000 commercial flights annually from Philadelphia International Airport to Atlantic City's airport - the equivalent of an extra jet taking off or landing there every eight minutes, 365 days a year, during the 18-hour flight day. On the ground, tens of thousands more people could be at the midsize regional airport each day and traveling Atlantic County roads to get there. Reps. Robert E. Andrews (D., N.J.) and Joe Sestak (D., Pa.) say permanently moving routes to Atlantic City International Airport, which is 12 miles inland in Egg Harbor Township, might solve air-traffic woes in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. But while officials from the South Jersey Transportation Authority, which operates the airport, extol the plan as an "easy button" strategy to increase business at the facility, others aren't sure. "We do have to question the quality-of-life ramifications for the people living in the greater Atlantic County area," said Hamilton Township Committeeman Thomas Palmentieri, whose community abuts the northwest edge of the 5,300-acre site. "We have to look at noise pollution, air pollution, safety concerns, and ground-traffic issues. You can't just immediately say this is a great idea because it might one day bring more jobs," he said. Egg Harbor Township Mayor James J. "Sonny" McCullough applauded the notion of increased flights, but said he worried that his constituents could get stuck paying more for emergency services, such as fire and rescue. "It's not just if there's a major incident at the airport. It's the day-to-day increase in traffic accidents, heart attacks, and other medical emergencies," he said. "Since it's a state and federal facility, we receive no municipal tax ratable out of the airport, yet we have the expense of servicing it." The Federal Aviation Administration has determined that greater use of regional airports would not significantly reduce Philadelphia's congestion, agency spokesman Jim Peters said. http://www.philly.com/philly/business/20090308_Questions_fly_on_use_of_Atlantic_City_airpo rt.html @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Important Aviation News Stories This Week[ Auf dieses Posting antworten ]
