DVD writer problems

My TSSTcorp/Samsung SH-S183A SATA drive has recently started playing up,
but only in Linux (Debian unstable). Has anyone else experienced
anything like the following?

One problem is that if I eject a disc that's been mounted, whether by
software or by pressing the button, it ejects then immediately reloads,
so I have to quickly snatch the disc out of the tray. Or, if I'm too
slow, but immediately press eject again before it's had a chance to
mount the disc, the tray will stay out then.

The other problem seems to be specific to CDRs already containing
content, at least it didn't seem to affect a DVD-R and a pressed CD-ROM
I tried. When loading a CD the drive goes through its usual process of
whirring and klunking with its LED flashing, and the PC's drive access
light on steadily, but this goes on for much longer than usual. If I try
to mount the disc, I'm in for a long wait, but if I press the eject
button during this phase, it immediately mounts instead of ejecting!

I would have thought it's a hardware problem, but I tried one of the
problem discs in Windows (Vista) and it worked correctly there. Could
there be a bug in hal or udev or something? I didn't change my kernel
just before the problem developed, but it could have started after a
dist-upgrade. Or perhaps the drive is faulty but only under conditions
that Windows doesn't create eg software locking of the tray. Either way,
the vendors and manufacturers (and Conor ;-/) are bound to blame Linux
if it tests OK in Windows, so I don't think I'd get anywhere if I tried
to return it.

I've done another dist-upgrade today and upgraded my kernel to 2.6.26. I
also reflashed the drive's firmware even though it was already the
newest version, and then tried an older firmware. None of it's helped.
