Outlook 2007 on Vista causes PC to go into low-colour mode

I've just had an intriguing report from a customer whose Vista PC I upgraded
to SP1 earlier today. He didn't want me to stay until the rpgrade had
completed as it was taking a long time.

Windows starts in full-colour mode, but as soon as he starts Outlook, the
screen goes into a "silvery, pixellated" mode (sounds like it's running with
16 colours) having sought permission to continue. As soon as he closes
Outlook, the screen goes back to normal mode. It only happens with Outlook,
not with other Office apps.

Even when it's displaying with fewer colours, the Display Properties still
says "Highest (32 bit)". The graphics card is listed correctly, so it hasn't
degraded to "Generic VGA".

The lead-up to all this is that Outlook originally failed to start (rotating
cursor which then went back to arrow without window opeming) so he started
in Safe Mode which came up in "silvery, pixellated" display. When he booted
back into normal mode, colours were normal and Outlook started OK - but went
into silver moder while Outlook was running.

Has anyone ever seen this symptom? It sounds very odd. I'm only describing
what he told me - I'v not seen it with my own eyes.

What's the best remedy - repair/reinstall Outlook from CD?
